THE HABSBURG DYNASTY IN AUSTRIA

1273 The Habsburg Dynasty begins when Rudolph of Habsburg [a region in modern Switzerland] is elected King. He occupies Vienna in 1276, and since then Vienna becomes the Residenzstadt (Imperial seat and residence) of most subsequent Kings.

1353 The future Habsburg crown prince, Rudolph IV, marries the daughter of Karl IV of Bohemia, the Holy Roman Emperor.

Advantageous marriage becomes the pillar of expansionism for the Habsburg Dynasty, so much so that Ovid, the writer says: "Others make war, you, fortunate Austria, marry!" Inter-marriages became the norm. Subsequent Rulers marry into the royal families of Hungary, Burgandy, Spain, etc.

1529 The Habsburg Empire expands North to Bohemia and Moravia (Czechoslovakia).
