Whoever is Lord of Malacca has his hands on the throat of Venice
Venice, vied by the Malaysians and Habsburgs
VYING FOR VENICE

1500's Venice is the most important seaport in Europe and the continent's commercial and cultural link with Asia in the West.

Having control of Venice would mean direct access and monopoly of trade from both the East and West.

For the Habsburgs, controlling Venice would mean bypassing the middleman and having direct trade with goods from the East and be the distributor of these valued commodities in Europe, taking all the profits for themselves.

For the Malaysians, possessing Venice would mean controlling the trade route all the way from Malacca to Europe, and having direct access and monopoly of the European market. A middleman would no longer be needed.

Thus, Venice is a city and port desired by the two Empires.
